Through Open Learning you have access to over 400 courses and approximately 57 programs including certificate, diploma, degree and post-baccalaureates. The various programs available for study at Open Learning are recognized internationally by other educational institutions and employers.
All persons are eligible for general admission to Open Learning and can apply for course registration as well as admission into credential programs at any time.
Students enrolled in Open Learning programs can maximize their skills and experience through Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR), which awards academic credit for non-formal learning and knowledge such as industry-based training, professional development workshops and seminars, private study and work experience. PLAR is a process which helps you to identify, describe and document knowledge and learning you have developed through work and life experience.
Open Learning Courses and Programs
Open Learning offers courses, certificates, diplomas, degrees and post-baccalaureate programs in the following areas:
Student Service Advisors develop educational plans and provide assistance with regards to:
- prerequisites and entrance requirements for specific programs
- transfer credit
- assessment of informal credit
- preliminary program planning
- course sequencing and selection
Personal Program Advisors assist students enrolled in a full program with their progression through the entirety of their program from enrolment to graduation.

English Requirements
The language of business at Open Learning is English and therefore services and course instruction are provided in English.
Students are required to have proficiency in English suitable for the course level.
Post-secondary courses offered through TRU-OL require post-secondary English reading and writing skills.
Students registering for courses that do not specify prerequisites beyond English 12 should have sufficient English proficiency.Students studying on campus with TRU will take an English Placement Test (EPT) and will be placed in the appropriate level of English language study as indicated. Students studying by distance in Open Learning courses need to self-assess their proficiency in English according to the f unless asked for further proof of proficiency.
If an on-campus student has a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or other test score, they may elect to enter into English as a Second Language (ESL) or academic courses on-campus without taking the TRU English Placement Test for the following scores:

All students residing outside Canada or without permanent residency status within Canada pay the international tuition rate when they register for Open Learning courses.

Course Exams
International students required to write their exams outside of Canada must submit a Statement of Presiding Supervisor form. Students are required to locate their own exam supervisor and once the student and supervisor have completed their portion of the form, it should be faxed or mailed to Open Learning.
Currently Open Learning has exam centres in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan and Korea where students can access exam supervisors. Please contact the Open Learning Exams department at exams@tru.ca for contact information at these locations, or for any exam related questions.
Note: Students normally have six examination sessions to choose from over the 30-week period from the date of registration.
